Artist’s Statement

j madison rink art detail I felt the influence of the native spirits guiding my work in earth art photography from the beginning and this has remained a constant over the years that I have continued to set out and hunt for these primitive and often magically ancient images. All of this figurative work has symbolically in one way or another been inspired by my exposure to the highly compelling antique tribal and Asian art created by the indigenous peoples from around the world. I am most often drawn to a specific area where I will move along a wall of rock as if by Braille to find what I feel I am seeking. At other times an image will magically leap out and simply present itself to me.

It seems an extraordinary time in our earth history to view all that surrounds us in new, healing and “artfelt” ways. What better time to honor, embrace and commune with the earth by bringing her environmentally “naturally sculpted” ancient works in to our personal living environments so that we might languish in its uniquely centering, richly textured and stunningly colourful influence.
